This Mexican Official Standard establishes the specifications to be met by the two types of seals or side seams to be used in the body of three-piece metal containers, which may be seams with electrical soldering or seams with glue or cemented seams. Joints using solder containing lead are strictly prohibited.
Manufacturers of metal containers intended to contain food and beverages, as well as importers and distributors of canned food and beverages, are obliged to comply with this Mexican Official Standard.
Test method In lithographed containers, the seam with lead solder is distinguished by a wide stripe, without lithography, in vertical sense, with a width of 12 to 20 mm. In electric soldering, such stripe shall be 3 to 6 mm. wide. In non-lithographed containers, the lead-soldered seam has an indentation along the seam and two or more notches on the seam. In the case of the electric soldered seam, the seam is slightly raised, less than 3 mm wide and has no notches.
